Partition1947 CE – 1947 CESouth Asia
Partition of India
The division of British India into India and Pakistan (West Pakistan and East Bengal) along broadly religious lines, causing one of history's largest mass migrations (10-20 million displaced) and an estimated 1-2 million deaths in communal violence.
Preceding Causes
The Muslim League's demand for a separate Muslim-majority state (the Pakistan Resolution of 1940), Congress-League political deadlock exacerbated by the failure of the Cabinet Mission Plan, communal violence (especially Direct Action Day 1946), and Mountbatten's decision to advance the independence date to August 1947.
