Preceding Causes

The immediate trigger was the introduction of Enfield rifle cartridges rumored to be greased with cow and pig fat (offensive to Hindu and Muslim soldiers). Deeper causes included the Doctrine of Lapse annexation policy, cultural insensitivity, economic exploitation, and resentment of Company rule.
