First Battle of Panipat
On April 21, 1526, Babur's disciplined Timurid army of roughly 12,000 — equipped with field artillery and matchlock firearms — decisively defeated Ibrahim Lodi's much larger force (traditionally estimated at 100,000, likely exaggerated), ending the Delhi Sultanate and founding the Mughal Empire.
Preceding Causes
Babur's ambition to reclaim his ancestral Timurid heritage in Hindustan, combined with an invitation from disaffected Afghan nobles including Daulat Khan Lodi. Babur's use of Ottoman-style field artillery and the tulughma flanking tactic proved decisive.
Historical Consequences
Founded the Mughal Empire, which would dominate India for over two centuries. Introduced gunpowder field artillery as the decisive weapon on Indian battlefields. Displaced Afghan Lodi rule with a Persianate-Timurid court culture that would eventually produce the Taj Mahal.
